At the end of April, LAB42 hosted the Amsterdam stop of Next Frontier AI, a European roadshow organised by SPRIND, Germany’s Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation. After earlier events in cities including Warsaw, Zurich, Paris and Munich, the initiative came to Amsterdam Science Park to meet researchers, builders, investors and AI talent from the Dutch ecosystem.

Next Frontier AI asks an ambitious question: can Europe build its own frontier AI labs, rather than simply follow developments in the US and China? Through its challenge programme, SPRIND is making €125 million in non-dilutive funding available to support teams working on breakthrough approaches in AI. Over a 24-month process, selected teams can receive staged funding, with the aim of developing up to three European frontier AI labs.

Europe’s role in the current AI transformation

The evening at LAB42 brought together around 150 invited guests for an interactive programme on Europe’s role in the current AI transformation. Speakers and participants reflected on Europe’s strengths: world-class research, engineering talent, strong institutions and a collaborative innovation ecosystem. At the same time, the discussion addressed a familiar challenge: how to translate that talent into breakthrough scale and long-term technological independence.

Hosting the event at LAB42 was a fitting choice. As the UvA’s hub for digital innovation and AI at the Science Park, LAB42 brings together researchers, students, entrepreneurs and companies working at the intersection of science and real-world impact.
