Many proposals were submitted but only eight teams were selected to take part in the first round of the Justice Challenge. After the contestants pitched their ideas to a jury of professionals on 24 May 2019, Clarity Now emerged as the winner, narrowly beating out Adab Finance and Finc. For Migrants.
An accelerated start
The start-ups receive all kinds ofsupport. Various workshops have been or will be held and the start-ups are given the opportunity to present themselves both within and outside the UvA. Last but not least, each winning team is given access to start-up capital in the amount of EUR 2,500 and help in filing investment applications.
A just instrument
Clarity Now, the winner of the Justice Challenge, was founded by student Emma Morgan (LLM Public International Law). She came up with the idea during a presentation by lecturer DrNienke Doornbos. The start-up aims to develop tools that will contribute to making initial interviews with the IND just as asylum seekers arrive in this country fairer and juster. That is why she is developing an app that will allow asylum seekers to record their initial interview with the IND and alert them to their rights.
Islamic banking
Adab Finance is currently made up of Olaf Stolk and Jorrit Jans, who plan to start collecting, bundling and providing ethical services offered by a number of banks. This is rooted primarily in the concept of Islamic banking, a system of banking in accordance with the principles of Sharia and Islamic law. It is a basic tenet of Islamic banking, for instance, that interest may not be levied.
Entrepreneurship for refugees
Finc. for Migrants was set up by Ous Haidar and Tesseltje de Lange. Their start-up Finc. for Migrants is a service that provides refugees with all-in support when setting up a business.
