Through the Accelerate Programme, the DSC has awarded funding for a data scientist or engineer to join the Amsterdam Research Institute for Legal Studies (ARILS) to introduce the use of data science within the faculty.

The data scientist or engineer will act as ‘kwartiermaker’ for introducing data science in the faculty. He/she will work in close connection to multiple research groups within ARILS who already have (some) experience with data science. But he/she will also reach out to other research groups that might benefit from learning about integrating data science within their work. The data scientist / engineer will work across all of the faculty’s domains.

To facilitate the use of data science within the law school, the data scientist / engineer will:

  1. be connected to existing empirical scholars to support them in their existing research and help them with data scientific challenges they face in their research;
  2. assess what other interests and needs there are within the faculty for empirical or data analytical work, and develop training and support for these researchers;
  3. will form an informal network where researchers support each other as well as other scholars in the law school with questions they have about methods (“the research methods garage”). This group will also investigate how they can improve teaching of empirical methods throughout the law school.

At the end of 2023 ARILS strives to have a clear vision on the role and benefits of the data scientist / engineer within the Amsterdam Law School.

The DSC aims to enhance the university’s research by developing, sharing and applying data science methods and technologies. Through its Accelerate Programme, the DSC will support faculties as they pursue data driven research and stimulate the hiring of data scientists and engineers. The programme is not only intended to facilitate knowledge exchange throughout the university, but also incentivise the integration of these roles into existing research activity.
