New ABS professor of Corporate & Financial Reporting Law
19 November 2021
The new ABS professor will join the Accounting section. In her teaching and research, Harmsen will share her knowledge on how accountancy operates in practice. This includes topics such as the impact of insolvency law on the auditor’s role, the continuity assumption, and the auditor’s role in cases involving fraud.
Harmsen studied economics and Dutch law at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and successfully completed the postgraduate auditor programme at the same university. She has worked as a lawyer since 1996 and has been a partner at the law firm TOON Advocaten since 2020. After defending her thesis Administratieplicht en aansprakelijkheid voor het boedeltekort, she received her PhD from Radboud University in 2019.
In addition to her membership in various editorial boards, Karen Harmsen is a member of the University of Amsterdam’s Law & Finance Master’s programme Advisory Board, the Insolvency Law Advisory Board of the Netherlands Bar, and the Supervisory Board of Amstelveen Sport.
Marc Salomon, Dean of the Amsterdam Business School is very pleased with the appointment: 'Karen has a background in both accountancy and law and combines knowledge of scientific theory and practice in these fields. This is ideal for delivering high-quality teaching and research at the interface of accountancy and law.'
