As part of the €18 million HyTROS research and development programme announced by the Dutch organisation GroenvermogenNL, associate professor Chris Slootweg of the Van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) will co-lead a research line into large-scale hydrogen storage. This will involve, amongst others, a PhD student at HIMS assessing the technology readiness of suitable hydrogen carriers.

In GroenvermogenNL the three Dutch ‘top sectors’ of Chemistry, Energy, and High Tech Systems and Materials cooperate to accelerate the market for green hydrogen and green chemistry. Last week it announced its first research programme HyTROS (Hydrogen Transport, Offshore, and Storage). This focuses on (pipeline) transportation, above and underground storage, offshore transportation and storage, and safety. The HyTROS consortium involves 11 research universities, two universities of applied sciences, two research institutes and 18 industrial partners.

Hydrogen carriers

Chris Slootweg will co-lead the five-year research line into large-scale hydrogen storage that is funded with 5.4 million euros and involves the appointment of 5 PhDs and a postdoc researcher. In particular, he is involved with studying safe, reliable, and affordable hydrogen carriers based on storage performance (release, uptake, toxicity, hydrogen content, material characteristics, etc.). This will include newly established, less studied hydrogen carriers.

Under Slootweg’s supervision a PhD student will perform a technology readiness assessment of suitable H2 carriers. This work will be complemented by a PhD student at the University of Twente who will assess the technology readiness of import terminals for these carriers. The research is carried out in cooperation with industry partners Voyex and HyET E-Trol and supported by industry partners Gasunie and Aliaxis.
