Theatre, Performance and Dramaturgy (Arts and Culture)

Study programme

Theatre, Performance and Dramaturgy is a selective programme and research-led, combining core modules, electives and practice-based components. You will be introduced to key concepts and methodologies and engage with themes such as cultural translation, cultural policy and curation, archiving the performing arts, art and activism, and theatre and globalisation in seminars and projects. You will also have the opportunity to gain practical experience by doing an internship.

Programme structure

The Dual Master's programme Theatre, Performance and Dramaturgy comprises 90 ECTS credits. There are two specialisations.

    The Master’s thesis is an individually supervised research project. It allows you to develop a focused research question and demonstrate how you can work critically and independently with theatre and performance materials, methods and debates. The thesis can be closely connected to your specialisation, fieldwork or professional interests.

  • Internships

    The internship is an integral part of the dual Master’s programme and carries 30 ECTS. You gain field experience in the Netherlands or abroad, applying and testing your knowledge and skills in an artistic, cultural or research setting. Internship and thesis supervision are integrated into the learning trajectory, and opportunities draw on the programme’s extensive network of theatre, performance and cultural partners.

    Students taking a Dual Master's programme may in some cases be eligible for reimbursement of internship-related costs or fees, subject to the applicable regulations.

    Students who take part in an exchange can use the programme’s international collaborations to explore internship opportunities abroad. Exchange arrangements and available placements vary, so students should discuss their plans with the programme team.

    Cultural exchange on an academic as well as practical artistic level is a crucial component of the programme's curriculum. The programme cooperates with diverse universities in- and outside of Europe to make this exchange possible. These cooperations ensure that the exchange is flexible, occurring in 3 to 6-month timeframes, and meets the individual needs and plans of our students.   • Project example: I've Been Here

    I’ve Been Here is a piece that was created by students of the Master’s programmes Theatre Studies and International Dramaturgy as a shared practical project. The piece features the voices of students who frequent the University Theatre in Amsterdam, focusing on their experiences of it. The participants were invited to share their memories of the performances, events, lectures, discussion, or anything else they had experienced within the walls of the theatre. Each person describes the space in a different way, yet they all touch upon the rich history of everything that has occurred over the lifetime of the theatre. In listening, you might be able to sense something of this history yourself from these reflections, and upon entering the theatre you are invited to continue filling the space with new memories, creating the history that is yet to come.
