Why study Neurobiology at the UvA?

Study the brain at multiple levels 

Explore neuroscience from molecular mechanisms and synapses to networks, behaviour and cognition. You specialise in one area while learning to connect processes across different levels.

Receive personal guidance 

Study in a small track cohort of approximately 20 to 25 students. Close contact with lecturers and coordinators gives you space to discuss ideas, develop your interests and prepare for your internships.

Join an active research community 

The tracks are embedded in neuroscience research groups at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences. You learn from active researchers and gain access to specialist expertise, facilities and a professional network.

Build practical research experience 

Research internships form a substantial part of the programme. You learn to formulate questions, conduct research, analyse results and communicate your findings using methods relevant to your chosen track.

Choose one of four tracks

Together, the four tracks cover neuroscience from molecular mechanisms to cognition: 

Molecular Neurosciences 

Investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in brain development, function and disease. 

Physiology of Synapses and Networks 

Study how neurons and synapses communicate, how neural networks process information and how these processes contribute to learning, memory and behaviour. 

Psychopharmacology and Pathophysiology 

Investigate disease mechanisms using experimental models and pharmacological approaches to understand and treat neurological and psychiatric disorders. 

Cognitive Neurobiology and Clinical Neurophysiology 

Examine how brain activity gives rise to cognition and behaviour and how neurophysiological methods can be used to study healthy and disrupted brain function. 

Is Neurobiology right for you? 

This programme is designed for curious and engaged students who want to understand how the brain works across different levels of organisation. 

The programme may suit you if you:

  • are curious about how processes at the level of genes, cells and synapses shape networks, behaviour and cognition;  
  • want to engage with current theories, technologies and research methods in neuroscience;  
  • enjoy combining perspectives from neuroscience, medicine and the life sciences;  
  • want to investigate complex scientific or medical questions rather than approach them from only one discipline;  
  • are motivated to develop your critical thinking, practical research skills and scientific independence; 
  • have a relevant background in biology, biomedical sciences, medicine or a related quantitative field and meet the subject-specific admission requirements. 

Where can Neurobiology take you? 

The programme provides a strong foundation for a scientific career in neuroscience, including PhD research. Graduates may also use their research, analytical and communication skills in areas such as biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, education, science communication, policy and research funding. 

Your internships, contact with researchers and exposure to different professional environments help you explore which direction best matches your interests.
