Spotlight on a course: History and Philosophy of the Humanities

In this course, we will first discuss the rise of the modern philological humanities. Their roots will appear to lie in earlier processes of vernacularization, in which classical languages of learning were replaced by local vernaculars. A study of this process will also provide a surprising perspective on the history of early modern philosophy in Europe. Thus, we will explore, among others, the ideas of Kant and Vico on national character, and Nietzsche’s views on philology, tragedy, and nationalism.
