Study programme

The Research Master's in Child Development and Education is an intensive, selective two-year programme that trains students to become researchers in the field of parenting, education and child development. The programme consists of 120 EC credits.

Programme outline

A distinction is made in the curriculum between:

  • disciplinary courses
  • courses in methods and statistics
  • writing and presentation skills
  • internship and research projects

Within the research master programme, students can follow two separate routes: a 'regular route' or a 'clinical route' .

  • In the regular route, you take the introductory course, courses in methods and statistics and academic skills, and choose five disciplinary courses in the field of child development or education (or a combination). You conduct a research internship in the first year, and a thesis in the second year.
  • The clinical route is the combination of the two-year research master’s programme focusing on clinical courses, followed by an additional six-month clinical internship. After successfully completing the clinical route, you obtain a research master’s degree, a degree in orthopedagogiek or forensische orthopedagogiek (also requires an additional forensic course), and you can apply for a ‘Basisaantekening Psychodiagnostiek’. The clinical route contains courses on diagnostics and treatment taught in Dutch, and thus requires proficiency in Dutch. 'I chose the research master because in addition to the practical subjects, the statistical subjects also attracted me a lot during the bachelor. I wanted to further explore my interests in the field of statistics, but at the same time not lose sight of practice because I enjoy working with children. The clinical route of the research master was therefore the perfect choice for me. I am now engaged in research but also in practice! When I have a job, I hope to continue this combination and in this way build a bridge between scientific research and practice.' Student Hannah Boll

Workload

The research master is a fulltime programme. You will have weekly tutorials and work on your own research project under supervision of a research master staff member. In addition, a large part of your programme focuses on self-study (e.g., preparing for tutorials, working on assignments).

Tutorials: approx. 10 hours per week
Working on research project and self-study: approx. 30 hours per week
