2016 Annual Report

In 2016, the composition of both the Executive Board and the Supervisory Board changed. Despite this, the Annual Report demonstrates a high level of continuity at the UvA in terms of the quality of its performance in teaching and research and in operational management and finances.

Below is a small selection from the 2016 annual report:

Education

The number of enrolled students rose to more than 31,000. In addition, results from the National Student Survey showed an increase in student satisfaction levels. The annual report also describes, among other things, the situation in 2016 with regards to study success, internationalisation and students of non-western background.

Research

In 2016, the number of doctorates conferred was higher than ever, at a total of 546. The annual report breaks down this number by faculty and male-female ratio.
Numerous UvA researchers received grants from the European Research Council and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. The annual report lists the recipients.

Finance, diversity and democratisation

Over the course of 2016, the three committees (finance, diversity and democratisation) that were set up following the 2015 protests, delivered their reports. The annual report describes the results and next steps.

Human resources policy

One of the UvA’s priorities is a strong and social HR policy. The annual report describes how a start was made on this in 2016.

Engagement

The annual report also describes the UvA’s engagement with society through a number of examples. In 2016, Helmer Helmers’ discovery of a 17^th century silk gown in a shipwreck in the Waddenzee made global headlines. Methodologist Claire Stevenson received a prize for her research proposal applying mathematical models to explain creativity in the human brain. And psychobiology student Livio Bod and his team received a prize for their concept for converting hospital waste into energy and drinking water.
