The UvA has been working on: supplementing the way in which we prevent our education or research from contributing to violations of human rights; clarifying our house rules; and launching an independent investigation into the course of demonstrations in May 2024.

Framework for international cooperation

The events surrounding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the war and what the UvA's response should be, led to a new discussion about research collaboration with third parties. In response, a broad academic working group has gathered views from within UvA to help create an expanded ethical assessment framework for international collaboration. Once adopted, the new guidelines and extended assessment framework must prevent the UvA from contributing to the following through education or research:

  • violation of human rights
  • misuse of knowledge for undesirable military purposes
  • serious damage to the environment

House rules

Before and during the summer, there was extensive discussion about the UvA's house rules. That is why work was started on updating those house rules, which also took the reactions of students, staff, local trade unions FNV, CNV and AOb and several other civil society organisations into account. The UvA's Central Works Council and the Central Student Council are the main partners in this process and have been granted the right to consent on this subject.

Independent external investigation

Partly at the request of the Central Works Council, an independent investigation has taken place into the course of the demonstrations on campus between 6 and 17 May 2024. Among other things, the investigation looked at the Executive Board’s actions.
