How do I abbreviate ‘Bachelor’? What is the correct spelling? How do I write with respect for others? At the UvA, we have established a number of guidelines and agreements for spelling and writing style. This ensures a clear and consistent tone in our communications.

The UvA writing style

At the UvA, we communicate in a self-assured, open and inclusive manner. This means, among other things, that we emphasise the quality of the UvA, use an active voice, and take the reader’s perspective into account. Read more about the UvA writing style.

Spelling and UvA terminology

By following consistent writing conventions and rules, we create cohesion across our communications. For example, we follow the 'Woordenlijst Nederlandse Taal' (also known as the 'Green Booklet'). We also use consistent spelling for frequently used UvA terms, such as departments, abbreviations and academic terminology. Read about the spelling rules and writing conventions we apply.

English texts

At the UvA, we provide information in both Dutch and English wherever possible. For English texts, we also use a consistent spelling and style. The style conventions are outlined in the English Style Guide, and the translation list specifies the correct terms and spelling for job titles, academic terminology and formal bodies.
