Vinkers explores the question of why one person develops long‑term symptoms while another remains more resilient. Drawing on scientific research and clinical experience, he outlines how patterns emerge and why they often only become visible later in life. The lecture offers a framework for better understanding and contextualising behaviour and symptoms, and underlines the importance of early detection and support. Without simple solutions, but with an awareness of complexity and of the potential for change.
Christiaan Vinkers is a psychiatrist and Professor of Stress and Resilience at Amsterdam UMC and GGZ InGeest. His work focuses on the impact of stress and trauma on mental health, and on the factors that promote recovery and resilience. He connects scientific research with clinical practice and applications in society. Vinkers is co‑founder of the platform Jeugdtrauma ('Childhood trauma') and author of the book Littekens uit je jeugd ('Scars from your youth').
