Europe is not a fixed entity, but rather a process. Our research, which is internationally groundbreaking in more than one field, seeks to account for the dynamic transformations from 1800 to the present. Our interdisciplinary approach meets that challenges through a number of specialisms and intellectual frameworks, with an emphasis on collective identity and cultural heritage.

Among other things, our research concentrates on nationalism in historical context; Eastern and Western Europe; European integration; Europe as an idea and an identity; the limits of Eurocentrism; the encounter with the other.

European Studies research is interdisciplinary and transnational, and places emphasis on collective identity and intellectual heritage. Europe is primarily explored in four distinct clusters:
