You are legally required to have obtained your Bachelor’s (and if applicable Master’s) degree prior to the start of your (pre-)Master's programme. This is called the ‘Bachelor’s-before Master’s rule’.

The Admissions Office needs to verify whether you have successfully completed your previous education. Therefore, we need to receive digital documents of your final transcripts (list of marks) and degree certificates of each degree that is relevant for your admission before the start of your programme. Make sure to mention your UvA Student ID Number on each document.
Please note that you cannot start with your (pre-)Master’s programme if your documents are not received before the deadline that applies to you.

  • I applied with a Dutch degree certificate

Since you will complete your degree at a Dutch institution of higher education, you don’t have to provide us with a copy of your degree certificate. The Admissions Office will verify your degree digitally in:

    • August (for September start)
    • January (for February start)

Note: your graduation date must be no later than:

    • 31 August (September start)
    • 31 January (February start)

If you cannot meet this deadline, you will not be able to start your Master’s programme.

Check your conditional admission letter to see if additional documents like your final transcript are required. If so, check how to submit these below under ‘How can I submit my digital documents’.

Have you completed all courses of your Bachelor's (and/or Master’s) programme, but is your graduation not yet officially registered in DUO? Then we also accept a graduation statement, sent by an authorised department at your institution of higher education. Below you can find more information regarding the graduation statement.

If you are a UvA student, make sure you apply for your degree certificate in time (if possible before 1 July). More information is available on the student website.

  • I applied with a non-Dutch degree

If you have obtained your diploma from a university outside the Netherlands, please submit digital copies of the following official documents:

    • your original higher education diploma(s)
    • your original higher education transcript(s)
    • additional documents mentioned in the email you received about your conditional admission.

    Please note that:

    • if your original documents are not in English, Dutch, German, or French, we need an official translation by a sworn translator*.
    • translated documents can be sent separately by the sworn translator by email
    • you have to submit digital documents of all previous (Bachelor's and/or Master's) programmes that are relevant for admission to your Master's of pre-Master's programme. More information on which documents to send and what deadline applies to you can be found in your conditional admission letter sent by the Admissions Office.

    * Sworn translators are officially recognised and authorised, often by a court or government body, to translate documents for official or legal use.
Their translations need to be accompanied by a statement, stamp, and signature from the translator, certifying that the translation is a true and accurate representation of the original document.
In many countries, sworn translators are listed in a specific register. In case your country does not have sworn translators, a certified translator may perform the official translations. A public notary can certify the signature/identity of the translator thereafter.

Below you can find more information regarding the graduation statement.

  • Graduation statement

If your diploma will not be issued before the deadline you can submit a graduation statement instead. Once we have received your digital documents, we aim to verify them within 3-4 weeks. Upon successful verification, and provided you have met all other admission requirements, you will receive an email confirming your unconditional admission.
