What you need to know

Student housing in Amsterdam is difficult to find. The UvA can offer a limited number of rooms to roughly half of the newly incoming international students. The sooner you act, the better your chances are of getting a room.

Am I eligible for UvA student housing?

UvA student housing is meant as a 'soft landing' in the Netherlands. This way, students who have just arrived and do not know Amsterdam yet, instantly have a place to stay for the first 1 or 2 semesters.

The requirements for eligibility:

  • You are going to start your first year at UvA (Bachelor/Master/Exchange)
  • your study programme is taught in English
  • your previous education was outside of the Netherlands
  • you currently don’t live in the Netherlands
  • you are (conditionally*) accepted to your study programme

The processing time of study applications can differ per faculty. Keep in mind that when applying (late) for a study programme, your study application might not receive the status ‘conditionally accepted’ in time for the housing application. The housing department works on a first come, first served basis and does not prioritize students when their faculty has a long processing time.

Students with AES, ASTS or AMS scholarships

Students who are granted an Amsterdam Excellence Scholarship (AES), an Amsterdam Science Talent Scholarship (ASTS) or an Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS) and want to use the UvA Housing Service have priority for accommodation. However, when applying late for the housing service, it is possible there are no longer rooms available.

When can I apply for student housing?

Students starting their studies in February 2022 that are considered eligible for student housing by their faculty will receive an email from with the link to the housing application form just prior* to their application start time. This email contains instructions on how to fill in the application form and the link to the application form.

* If you still have not received an invitation email 48 hours prior to your start time stated below, please contact the International Student Housing Office.

The following housing application start dates are very important as we work on a first come, first served basis:

Student group (based on nationality) Start time for housing application
Exchange - Outside European Union Wednesday, 3 November 2021, 08:00am (CET)
Exchange - European Union/EEA*/Swiss Wednesday, 3 November 2021, 08:00am (CET)
Bachelor's & Master’s - Outside European Union Thursday, 4 November 2021, 08:00am (CET)
Bachelor's & Master’s - European Union/EEA*/Swiss Thursday, 4 November 2021, 08:00am (CET)

* European Economic Area

Are you a student starting their studies in the academic year 2022-2023? These dates do not apply to you! Your housing application will start at the end of May/early June 2022.

The application form

The application form becomes active at the above start time that applies to you. The moment you finalize (by paying the UvA housing fee) and submit the application form will determine your position of entry in our records. In other words, the applications are handled in the order in which they are received. You will be considered eligible for a room only after you have finalized your application.

For more information, check the apply step by step webpage.

Why are there different start dates for the housing application?

UvA International Student Housing has approximately 3000 rooms. We have two target groups for housing:

  • Degree-seeking students (students starting a Master’s or Bachelor’s programme)
  • Exchange students (1 semester or full year)

The application for both groups is on a first come, first served basis. Besides this, in accordance with the International Office of all faculties, students who don't have a European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) or Swiss nationality, receive priority over those that do. This is because students from outside these regions are required to have a Dutch address to maintain their residence permit in the Netherlands.

How long can I stay in housing provided by UvA student housing?

All student housing contracts have a fixed rental period, with a maximum of one year. Students will get a rental period (1 or 2 semesters) as shown below. Renting for the entire fixed period means that you will be required to pay the rent up to and including the last date of your contract.

Type of study programme Maximum duration rental contract Rental period*
Bachelor's 2 semesters 2 February 2022 – 30 January 2023
Master's (1 & 2 years) 2 semesters 2 February 2022 – 30 January 2023
Exchange 1 semester 1 semester 2 February 2022 – 12 August 2022
Exchange 2 semesters 2 semesters 2 February 2022 – 30 January 2023

* Rental contracts of some buildings have different end dates in summer due to renovations and housing of Summer School programmes.

Shortening or extending the UvA student housing contract

It is not possible to shorten or extend your rental contract, or get a rent reduction for late arrival or early departure.

If you want to stay in Amsterdam after your housing contract provided by UvA housing ends, you will need to search for housing independently. The room you stayed in is needed again for a newly arriving international student. Please be aware that finding accommodation in Amsterdam after this period can still be very complicated. For more information, check out the webpage on how to find a room independently

Cancellation policy

It is not possible to cancel your housing contract, unless you terminate your enrolment or in case of significant personal circumstances.

Read more about our cancellation policy on the webpage Frequently Asked Questions.

Can I use UvA Housing if I have a disability?

Yes, students with a disability can contact the International Student Housing Office to discuss their housing options.

Make sure that you have a medical statement from your doctor with information as to why you have specific needs for your housing. UvA Housing requires that you upload the statement in your application.

If you do not contact UvA Housing well in advance or apply for housing late, it will be difficult, or even impossible to meet your housing needs.

Why can’t the UvA help every student with accommodation?

Amsterdam is a very popular place to live. Students (Dutch and international), as well as many others are looking for places to stay, and therefore affordable housing is scarce.

In this tight housing market, UvA International Student Housing has a limited number of rooms (approx. 3000 units) reserved, which can accommodate roughly half of the newly incoming international students every semester. This means that the other half must find a place on their own.

Don’t underestimate this, it often takes weeks or even months to find suitable accommodation. It is not a smart idea to just start searching when you arrive in Amsterdam for your studies. Therefore, we encourage everyone to start in time, and look for accommodation independently, even if you also applied for the UvA housing service.

For more information, check out the webpage on how to find a room independently.
