Starting university is a big step for prospective students and their parents. The University of Amsterdam (UvA) would like to help you and your child in the process of deciding on a study programme, choosing the UvA and arranging practical matters.

Studying in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a vibrant cultural and business hub with a cosy, small-scale feel. The UvA is situated in the heart of Amsterdam and has four campuses throughout the city. We hope your child will quickly feel at home in Amsterdam and enjoy exploring the city by bike.

Amsterdam was ranked 11th out of 200 cities in Mercer’s 2015 Global ‘Quality of Living Survey’. According to the 2015 Safe Cities Index, it is also the second safest city in Europe.

Study programmes at the UvA

The UvA offers a wide variety of English and Dutch-taught degree programmes.

Tuition fees and Scholarships

Tuition fees for degree programmes are dependent on the country of which the student is a citizen. Students from EU/EEA countries, Suriname or Switzerland pay the national tuition fee. Tuition fees for students from non-EU/EEA countries are considerably higher, however, because their study is not subsidised by the Dutch government.

We have established two scholarship programmes specifically designed to offer talented and motivated non-EU/EEA students the opportunity to pursue a degree at the UvA.

Housing

The UvA reserves around 2500 furnished rooms in Amsterdam for international students. It can be difficult to find housing in Amsterdam, so international students have the option of registering for a room through the UvA.

Student support

Moving to a new country and adjusting to university life can be a big change. To help students, we offer various forms of support, ranging from mentors to study and career advisers. There are also many social networks and student organisations that your child can join.

Visit the UvA

You are very welcome to join your child in visiting our open days. The UvA offers two Bachelor’s Days each year, which include a special information session for international students.
