Registration and admissions procedure

If you are not or not yet employed by Amsterdam Law School, you can obtain your doctorate in one of the following three ways: by becoming an employee (i.e. gaining a doctoral position), by obtaining an external scholarship or by being admitted as an external PhD candidate. The conditions and procedures differ, as do for example the duration of the doctoral programme and some financial aspects. These differences are set out in the overview below.

Employee PhD candidates

Doctoral programme funding The programme is funded by or through the UvA and the PhD candidate is employed by the UvA
Costs borne by the PhD candidate None
Programme duration Four years
Participation in study programme Compulsory
Facilities
  • Supervision by two supervisors
  • Workspace
  • Access to the University Library
  • UvA email address
  • Access to Amsterdam Law School activities, research groups etc.
Programme start date 1 September, or sooner in exceptional circumstances


Contract PhD candidates

Doctoral programme funding The programme is funded by another organisation and the PhD candidate is not employed by the UvA
Costs borne by the PhD candidate None
Programme duration Four years
Participation in study programme Compulsory
Facilities
  • Supervision by two supervisors
  • Access to the University Library

  • Access to Amsterdam Law School activities, research groups etc.
Programme start date 1 December or 1 May


External PhD candidates

Doctoral programme funding The programme is not funded and the PhD candidate is not employed by the UvA
Costs borne by the PhD candidate €2,500 per annum
Programme duration No more than six years
Participation in study programme Compulsory
