If you are not or not yet employed by Amsterdam Law School, you can obtain your doctorate in one of the following three ways: by becoming an employee (i.e. gaining a doctoral position), by obtaining an external scholarship or by being admitted as an external PhD candidate. The conditions and procedures differ, as do for example the duration of the doctoral programme and some financial aspects. These differences are set out in the overview below.

Employee PhD candidates

Programme start date 1 September, or sooner in exceptional circumstances

Please note that occasionally vacancies for employee candidates are offered as PhD fellows, a function that combines research and teaching. The duration of such a PhD trajectory is 6 years and the net research component will be approximately 4 years.


External PhD candidates

Doctoral programme funding The programme is funded by the PhD candidate, or through a scholarschip (the UvA does not offer scholarships), or facilitated by the employer financially or through donating time. The PhD candidate is not employed by the UvA
Costs borne by the PhD candidate €2,000 per annum
Programme duration No more than six years
Participation in study programme Compulsory
Facilities
