Chang Liu, student

My name is Chang Liu, and I am 22 years old. I chose this programme because of my passion for understanding the complexities of human societies. The courses offered—such as Gender and Sexuality, Race and Ethnicity, and Public Policy—align perfectly with my interests.

The University of Amsterdam is renowned for its academic excellence. The opportunity to live in Amsterdam, a vibrant and international city, was also a significant factor in my decision.

What do you appreciate most about the programme?

I appreciate the programme's comprehensive curriculum, and especially enjoy the focus on gender and sexuality, a topic not commonly emphasized in other disciplines. The support from professors, tutorial teachers, and study advisors has been invaluable; they are your main points of contact when you enter the programme.

What will you learn, and how will it help you in the future?

A comprehensive curriculum means encountering subjects that may not always interest you, but these topics provide valuable background knowledge and help develop essential research skills, analytical skills, and a critical mindset, which are crucial for many careers and personal growth. In the future, I aim to engage in roles involving research, data analysis, and community engagement, such as Human Resources and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

What advice do you have for prospective students?

If you wish to study Sociology, be prepared for a lot of reading and research. Critical thinking is crucial. Also, consider practical aspects of living in Amsterdam like weather, finances, and housing. Remember, studying is not just about academics; it's also about living. Make genuine connections by listening and sharing to learn different perspectives. Participate in volunteering, group sessions, and extracurricular activities to enrich your experience.
