The focus will not just be on the data the technology relies on and issues such as bias or discrimination, but also on the (physical) technological infrastructure and its reliance on planetary resources. AI is more than just a technology that exists in the “cloud” but also one that is deeply embedded in the soil we walk on.

You will be actively encouraged to explore the use of AI by engaging with a case study of your own choice. While the lecturer will draw upon on his ethnographic work in India where he collaborated with artists and data professionals who work with and develop AI, you will be invited to do the same to produce your own engagement and analysis of a specific case of the use/presence of AI. To make AI “more concrete”, part of the assignments will happen outside to locate and trace AI around us all.

Indeed, the goal is to figure out how we now share a planet with AI! Students do not need a technological background in AI to participate nor do they need to be familiarity with theory/concepts of the humanities and social sciences.

Course registration

Registration is possible for students participating in an Honours program. The registration period for the Honours courses will be from Thursday, June 4, 10:00 am to Tuesday, June 9, 11:59 pm. You can register through the online registration form that will appear on Honoursmodules IIS. (registration is NOT through SIS)

Please note: Placement is not guaranteed if you register after June 9, so make sure you register on time. You will hear which course(s) you are registered for before the end of June
