What is this programme about?

Students and lecturers from International Criminal Law will tell you what you can expect from this programme and discuss career opportunities once you have graduated.

  • What will my career prospects be like?

This LLM programme prepares students for a career in international and transnational criminal law. Graduates are singularly qualified to assume leadership roles at prosecution services, judicial bodies and law firms specialised in transnational crimes and/or mutual legal assistance, academic institutions, NGOs, and government ministries including foreign affairs, justice, and defence. Other prospects include careers at international criminal courts and tribunals including the International Criminal Court (ICC).

  • What is the Amsterdam Law Practice?

The Amsterdam Law School offers experiential education that is unique in the Netherlands. In experiential education, you learn by reflecting on who you are as a legal professional and how you want to contribute to society in the future. You apply your academic knowledge of the law and your learned skills by putting yourself in the shoes of a legal professional in real or simulated cases. In clinics, for example, you will work on real cases. In simulations or law labs you will work on simulated cases.

You will be taught by top lecturers from the field and will learn a lot from each other in a small group of motivated students. Within each Master's programme it is possible to take at least 6 ECTS of experiential learning and a maximum of 12 ECTS.

  • Is there an Honour’s programme for Master’s students?

Yes, if you are looking for more challenge and academic depth the Honours programme Academic Excellence track could be interesting for you. It is designed for excellent law students with evident research talent. The programme can be pursued in addition to all LLM programs (Dutch and English). You will receive advanced training in research methods and academic skills as well as gather first-hand research experience during a research internship at one of our research projects.
