Language, Literature and Education

Add to favourites

The Master’s in Language, Literature and Education is a one-year programme designed for students who are interested in teaching language and literature. You will specialise in one of seven major European languages or language families.

An interdisciplinary academic approach

The Master's programme Language, Literature and Education offers a unique, interdisciplinary approach to the study of language and literature learning, combining linguistics and literature courses in your language of choice with courses in language and literature teaching. Individual components are electives or an internship, and a thesis written in the language of specialisation.

Language and literature in an educational context

Drawing from research and practice, you will take courses in both linguistics and literature. The linguistic strand of the programme focuses on language use, language variation and (foreign) language learning and teaching, while the literary strand zeroes in on the practical and conceptual ties between literature and education, addressing questions such as: How does one ‘teach’ literature? What is it that literature teaches us?

Specialising in a language of your choice

The Master’s in Language, Literature and Education responds to the educational needs of our contemporary multilingual society, where specialised knowledge of more than one culture and language is increasingly important. With experts in English, French, German, Italian, Scandinavian, Slavonic and Spanish, you will be able to take classes in both the linguistics and literature of your language of choice and apply theory and practice to your chosen language context.

An academic backbone for a teaching career

The programme is designed for students aiming to work or working in language teaching and learning, both nationally and internationally (see Career prospects). You will explore a number of features of foreign language and literature pedagogy and study the L2 classroom as a social setting. You will come to understand how theories of learning and teaching play out in real-world educational settings and how content and pedagogy are intertwined and best combined to create safe and effective learning environments for all students.

Degree certificate

The Master's in Language, Literature and Education is an accredited degree programme of Linguistics. After successful completion of this programme, you will receive a legally accredited Master’s degree in Linguistics and the title Master of Arts (MA).
