Why this programme
The Behavioural Data Science (BDS) programme offers a unique combination of advanced data science methods while maintaining a psychological perspective. What I valued most about the programme was the healthy balance between theory and application. You can be sure that every method, algorithm, or theory discussed will have plenty of opportunities to be explored in action; be it during a course project, the consultancy project, or the internship. The programme offers a careful selection of the most relevant and useful programming languages (R, Python, SQL) and establishes a great foundation for further data analysis techniques. Next to high in demand technical skills, the programme also puts an emphasis on soft skills such as consulting, visual thinking, or working in agile teams. All of that while having small group sizes and great academic as well as personal support during your studies.

The UvA is a leading research university within the Netherlands and worldwide. You will have the chance to be at the forefront of groundbreaking research and engage with interesting researchers. Furthermore, the UvA is a founding member of the Amsterdam Data Science Network, which pursues the exchange between research, business and society on the topic of data science. What should student know?
The programme is spanning over 1 year and includes plenty of coursework, an internship, and a thesis; be prepared that it can get challenging at times. While you cover a lot of different methods and have the autonomy to explore your field of interests during projects within courses, you should have a strong interest and desire for programming to really leverage that aspect. Before applying, check how your previous studies fit into the requirements; a pre-master might be necessary in order to become eligible.
