The Premaster’s programme in Chemistry is designed for motivated students who aim to gain admission to the Master’s programme in Chemistry offered jointly by the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU).

Who is the Premaster programme for?

This Premaster’s programme is intended for:

  • Students with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences (HBO). 
  • HBO Chemistry students who want to take the premaster programme as a minor during their studies. 

Students who complete the Premaster by January can immediately start the Master's programme in Chemistry in February or wait until the following September.

Programme structure

 

  • Number of EC: 30 EC
  • Duration: 5 months (September to January)
  • Courses: Chemical Bonding, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, Thermodynamics, Mathematics, and Molecular Analysis. Basic Academic and Scientific Skills are also taught during the program.

Admission requirements and enrolment procedure

  • I have (or will have) completed an HBO Chemistry degree by the time I start the Premaster: Apply via the Master’s admissions procedure (see route 1 in the document below) 
  • I want to follow the Premaster Chemistry as a minor during my HBO Chemistry Get approval from your examinations board. Apply via the Bachelor’s bijvak admissions procedure and fill out the DataNose admissions form (see route 2 in document below). 
  • I have a different HBO or university degree: You must demonstrate a strong background in chemistry. Your application must clearly show that you have completed at least 90 EC of chemistry courses across all major subdisciplines: organic, inorganic, analytical, physical, and biochemistry. If course titles are unclear, you are responsible for providing detailed course descriptions. You must also have completed a Bachelor’s project. If you do not meet these requirements or failed to present them clearly, you will not be admitted to the Premaster or Master programme.
