Program

In this course, you will learn how to identify and analyze quality issues in healthcare. You will explore how to effectively apply improvement strategies and how to design, implement, and maintain clinical decision support systems (CDSS). This will enable you to directly translate quality improvements into clinical practice.

Topics

  • Measuring and improving quality of care (PDCA, audits and feedback, root cause analysis)
  • Designing and evaluating clinical decision support systems (CDSS)
  • Applicable cognitive theories and technical methods that enable computers to support healthcare professionals
  • Quality indicators, medical registries, funnel plots, and rankings

Course details

This course is offered entirely through e-learning. The study programme provides clear weekly deadlines to complete the course within 8 weeks, but you also have the option to progress at your own pace, either faster or slower. In addition, you will work on assignments both individually and in groups with fixed deadlines.

The exam is administered online, with an option for students to take it onsite at Amsterdam UMC (AMC location) upon request.

Course materials and assignments can be followed in either Dutch or English. Most of the literature is in English.

What will participants learn?

  • Apply methods to assess and collect clear, action-oriented quality indicators
  • Use a medical registry to benchmark the quality of care
  • Improve the quality of care using audit and feedback
  • Follow the steps required to implement an AI model or other clinical knowledge into a clinical decision support system (CDSS), from concept to practice
  • Identify clinical tasks that can be improved through decision support
  • Evaluate whether a CDSS application or feature within an electronic health record (EHR) aligns with a clinical use case
  • Explore methods and measurement tools to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of decision support tools
