After a postdoctoral experience at the LACDR (currently Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research), aimed to study the behavioral consequences for cognition of gene knockdown using RNA interference, I joined the Neuroscience Programme of the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences, Faculty of Sciences, University of Amsterdam as Assistant professor in 2010.

My lab is financed by the Innovational Research Incentive Scheme VIDI of The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), the International Foundation for Alzheimer's Research (ISAO) and Alzheimer Nederland and by The Network of European Funding for Neuroscience Research.

In my lab, we study the effect that brain insults such as physical or psychological stress, epileptic seizures, traumatic brain injury and others may have on adult neural stem cells in the hippocampus and how they are associated with neurodegeneration and cognitive impairment.
