The UvA endorses the principle that research data should be made as FAIR—findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable—as possible.

Sharing data is not always possible or desirable: in some cases, legislation and regulations prohibit publication of data, and the interests of the university and its researchers must not be harmed. With regard to research data, we therefore adhere to the principle of “as open as possible, as closed as necessary”, in line with the national guideline on knowledge security. Digital sovereignty is of great importance in this context: the ability to maintain control over the university’s digital infrastructure and data.

Actions and outcomes

  • Development of a Research Data Hub (2025–2027), an integrated platform for archiving and publishing research data.
  • Sustainable Archiving Project (2025–2027), which will investigate how and where researchers can archive data for the long term.
  • New RDM policy (completion expected mid-2026).
  • Development of a portal for information and obligations related to academic research, including Research Data Management (RDM).
  • Publication of a decision framework and procurement criteria for IT services and products.
