Major steps have already been taken in this area: in 2024, 93% of scientific articles by UvA researchers were Open Access, compared to 52% in 2018. However, many Open Access publications are created through agreements with large commercial publishers, the so-called read and publish deals. This is costly and not financially sustainable. The costs of publications via Article Processing Charges (APC) or Book Processing Charges (BPC) are getting higher, while a growing number of publications is increasing the financial burden further still. Therefore, we strive to transition to more sustainable publication models and invest in Diamond Open Access (DOA) platforms and initiatives to encourage publishing through non-commercial publishers. We do this through the UvA Diamond Open Access Fund, a project to publish DOA book materials, and participating in a project to set up a national DOA publication platform.
