Open Science improves the quality and verifiability of our research, increases its impact within and outside the university, and enables non-academics to engage with and contribute to scientific research, in line with the societal responsibility and public mission of the university.
Our vision of the future: Open Science in 2030
- By 2030, all UvA researchers will be aware of the principles underlying Open Science and be familiar with Open Science research practices.
- Our digital infrastructure for Research Data Management, and publishing and registering research output, optimally supports Open Science practices.
- To safeguard public knowledge and ensure the financial sustainability of Open Science, our dependence on commercial providers will be reduced: the university has moved away from transformative agreements with publishers and invests in collaborations with full Open Access publishers and Diamond Open Access initiatives.
- Our researchers do not only share their research results via Open Access publications but also make other forms of research output—such as data, metadata, research protocols and software—publicly available.
- Openness will also become the norm for education and educational resources through Open Education. This means that we teach students and PhD candidates to adopt an open attitude and convey the norms of Open Science to them.
- The UvA is part of a thriving Citizen Science Hub in Amsterdam, where research is carried out in collaboration with society.
- Finally, in order to structurally embed Open Science, policy measures have been introduced that prescribe that research data are registered in the Research Management System and that research data and methods are made as publicly accessible as possible.
How we achieve this is described in the Open Science Programme 2025-2029.
