The Dutch elections are fast approaching. As the pandemic still prevents parties from physical campaigning, the online campaign has become even more important than before. A central feature is political microtargeting: sending specifically designed messages to specifically selected audiences. What do we know about this kind of campaigning? How effective is it? Does it harm democracy? And is it regulated – or should it be?
