He has worked at the Amsterdam Business School since 2017, first as an assistant professor and later as an associate professor within the Business Analytics section. Rudinac’s research interests include multimedia, computer vision, information retrieval and machine learning. He develops methods to analyse large multimedia collections and applies these in domains such as urban computing, business and security.
Rudinac completed a 5-year integrated programme in Electrical Engineering at the University of Belgrade, a rigorous degree format known for its deep technical specialisation. He then moved to the Netherlands, where he obtained his PhD in Computer Science from Delft University of Technology, specialising in multimedia information retrieval. Since 2013 he has been part of the University of Amsterdam’s academic community, first starting as a postdoctoral researcher at the Informatics Institute before joining the ABS.
Prior to this appointment, Stevan Rudinac was an Associate Professor of Artificial Intelligence for Business with the ABS. He received the PhD degree in computer science from the Delft University of Technology in 2013. He has worked as a researcher with the University of Belgrade, Eindhoven University of Technology, and the Netherlands Forensic Institute.
He conducts research on multimedia information retrieval that is facilitating access to large multimedia collections and gaining insight from them, jointly analysing visual content and the heterogeneous information associated with it. This ranges from text and automatically generated metadata to information about users and their social network. His research focuses on urban computing, business, and security applications. Stevan is a scientific director of Multimedia Information Retrieval for Business, an interfaculty lab between the UvA Economics and Business and the Informatics Institute of the Faculty of Science. This lab is part of a broader UvA’s initiative focusing on AI Technology for People. In addition, he is a Co-Principal Investigator in the UvA Data Science Centre HAVA-Lab focusing on pioneering research in Human-Aligned Video AI.
His work has often been commended as an example of research with significant societal impact, including twice during the opening of academic years, first in September 2018 and more recently in September 2025 and featured prominently during the Amsterdam 750 celebration. In addition, Dr Rudinac has received a number of educational awards for his machine learning, deep learning and algorithms and data structures courses. These include the Van der Schroeff Award for the best lecturer at UvA Economics and Business (2020) and UvA Economics and Business Lecturer of the Year (2021).
Over the years he has taken various organisational and community service roles, such as most recently General Chair of the 30th International Conference on Multimedia Modeling (MMM'24), Technical Program Chair of the 33rd ACM International Conference on Multimedia (ACM Multimedia 2025), Technical Program Chair of 32nd International Conference on Multimedia Modeling (MMM'26) and General Chair of the 16th ACM International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval (ACM ICMR'26).
