We are all watching the terrible images of the Russian government’s aggression and the horrible violence in Ukraine. Our heart goes out to everyone who is directly and indirectly affected by the violence, which is threatening and disrupting lives in Ukraine and in the region. We are especially concerned for the well-being of students and colleagues with family and friends in Ukraine. Together, we need to lend support to these students and colleagues where we can. At the same time, we must not forget our colleagues and students with background and family in Russia. They too did not choose this war and we must resist polarisation.

Academic freedom is also deeply affected, with the destruction of university buildings and ever shrinking space for critical expression.

Thank you to colleagues who are putting time and intellectual energy into offering space for information and critical debate and other resources. Many important initiatives are taken in this Faculty and in collaboration with colleagues in other faculties and countries - see below.

We encourage all teachers and study advisers to support students who are facing distress and hardship, and let them know that we care deeply, and help them find the right resources where appropriate.
