Applicants from another Dutch faculty or university

The 1st step of our application process for students from another Dutch faculty or university is checking the entry requirements of this Master’s. In your online application you will be asked to upload proof of all mentioned requirements.

Entry requirements

The Admissions Office will evaluate your eligibility on the basis of 3 criteria.

  • 1. Check the requirements of your academic Bachelor’s degree

    You are eligible to apply to this Master’s programme if you are holding a completed Bachelor's or Master's degree in Economics or Econometrics from a Dutch university. You are expected to have taken courses at intermediate level in:

    • Microeconomics
    • Macroeconomics
    • Econometrics or Quantitative research methods

    Additionally, you are expected to have a solid background in mathematics and statistics. Relevant course work will be evaluated after your online application has been submitted:

    • You will normally be directly admitted to the MSc in Economics, with one of the Dutch Bachelor's degrees from our list. However, courses in micro- and macroeconomics and econometrics at intermediate level are strict requirements.
    • You are eligible to apply if you are holding a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitative field, such as Mathematics, Statistics and Physics, but only if courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics are included in the programme.
    • With a Transition Minor certificate you are unconditionally eligible to the programme.
    • If you have already graduated and your previous education does not fulfill this programme’s requirements: Students with previous EU academic/applied science education and an EU/EEA nationality will be taken into consideration for a pre-master’s programme. Students with previous non-EU education and a non-EU nationality may wish to consider applying for a Master’s-qualifying programme at the Cambridge Education Group.

    Students from other UvA faculties

    If you are a student with one of the following degrees, you have direct admission to our MSc in Economics, without any further conditions:

    • BSc PPLE with the Major E&B
    • BSc Future Planet Studies with the Major Economics
    • Beta-gamma with the Major Economics

    Pre-Master’s students from another Dutch Research University

    Limited places are available for pre-Master’s students Economics from other Dutch Research Universities. If you are a student from another Dutch Research University, you are expected to have taken courses at intermediate level in:

    • Microeconomics
    • Macroeconomics
    • Econometrics or Quantitative research methods

    It is required to have a solid background in Mathematics and Statistics and a minimum GPA of 7.0 is required.

  • 2. Calculate your Grade Point Average (GPA)

    If you apply to this programme and meet the entry requirements, you are selected on your GPA. Therefore, you are required to obtain an overall GPA of 7.0 with good grades on econometrics/quantitative research methods and micro- and macroeconomics. All on intermediate level. If your GPA is lower than 7.0, we will take your application into account, but you will need excellent grades on the above mentioned courses.

    Your GPA should be calculated over:

    • all Bachelor's degree results (year 1-3). Any additional Bachelor’s courses have to be included as well.
    • your Bachelor’s or Master’s, if you have a Bachelor’s as well as a Master’s degree. You need a GPA of at least 7.0 in the Bachelor’s or the Master’s.

    Send your GPA calculation along with your application, you do not have to update your GPA calculation after 1 June.

  • 3. Upload a motivation letter and show personal initiative

    If you want to apply for this programme, we expect you to have the intrinsic motivation to test and build upon knowledge gained in the programme. Coursework is designed to keep with this expectation. It demands significant personal initiative and active contribution from you. In your application, you are asked to upload a motivation letter.
