Would you like to join our Master’s programme in Communication Science after your applied science (in Dutch also known as HBO) programme? Then, you will first have to participate in a part of our Bachelor's programme.
With an applied science degree certificate you are not directly admissible to our Master’s programme in Communication Science. You need a Bachelor's degree in Communication Science for this. If your applied science programme is related to Communication Science at UvA, then you might qualify for an abridged programme. This is called the short-track Bachelor's programme.
Four year programmes on a university of applied sciences in the field of communication, media, business administration and management are considered to be related to Communication Science.
The short-track programme consists of 90 ECTS credits and lasts 1.5 years. It starts in September. After succesfully completing the short-track programme you will receive the title Bachelor of Science. Then, you will be admissable to our Master's programmes.
You can start the short-track programme after graduating from your applied science programme. There is also an alternative. Then, you will do the first semester of the short-track programme during your applied science programme. In that case the first semester is called the follow-on minor. After graduating from you applied science programme, you will only need to do the last year of the short-track programme.

Starting with a Bachelor’s programme (such as the short-track programme) after graduating from an applied science programme, might result in high costs. Participation in the follow-on minor during your applied science programme, however, might lead to lower costs in the long run. So carefully consider beforehand which tuition fees apply to your situation. DUO offers more detailed information about this matter.
If you are unsure whether your applied science programme is related to Communication Science, please contact the study advisers.
Students from a non-related applied science programme have the possibility to request exemptions for courses in the three year Bachelor’s programme. Students get 46 credits exempted at the most. This usually comprises part of the electives and the internship. So depending on your previous education, you can finish your bachelor's programme a couple of months earlier.
