You will learn how to build high-performance data pipelines, work with distributed systems, and apply cutting-edge methods in data mining, storage and retrieval, and in cloud and edge computing. The specialisation blends theoretical foundations with practical experience, providing a solid basis for careers in data engineering, big data systems design, infrastructure design, and beyond.

Why choose Big Data Engineering at UvA/VU

  • Develop expertise in designing and maintaining scalable, distributed data systems.
  • Gain experience with real-world technologies such as cloud platforms, data processing frameworks, and secure storage solutions.
  • Learn from researchers and lecturers from both UvA and VU, and access facilities and labs at both institutions.
  • Benefit from strong connections to industry and data-intensive research institutes.

Part of a joint degree Master's

Big Data Engineering is one of four specialisations offered within the joint Master’s in Computer Science, a collaboration between the University of Amsterdam and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. As a student, you will be enrolled at both universities and follow courses across both campuses. Upon graduation, you will receive a joint degree diploma.

Is this the right specialisation for you?

This specialisation is an ideal choice if you are interested in the architecture and optimisation of large-scale data systems. It suits students who enjoy building and improving the technical backbone of data-driven applications, and who are keen to excel at processing and analysis of massive dynamic data sources, and to explore both the theoretical and applied sides of big data infrastructure.
