Why study Digital Investigations at the UvA?

Evidence-based storytelling

Learn to turn complex digital information into compelling stories using various narrative techniques and multimedia formats.

Critical and reflexive practice

Develop a socially responsible approach by combining hands-on investigative methods with critical reflection on evidence, verification, and accountability.

An emerging field

Learn to navigate changing information environments shaped by algorithmic feeds, synthetic media, and fragmented information spaces.

Global investigations hub

Work with scholars, practitioners and organisations at the forefront of digital investigations.

Is Digital Investigations right for you?

  1. You are interested in the challenges of (dis)information, passionate about questions of accountability, transparency and justice, and want to understand the role of digital technologies in contemporary global affairs.
  2. You want to learn established and experimental digital investigation methods. Previous experience or technical competencies are not required.
  3. You want to read and engage with academic literature and debates about evidence production and post-truth dynamics. As a humanities programme, we ask you to reflect on the conceptual foundations of investigative work and its ethical, political and societal implications.
  4. You are self-motivated, can work independently and want your research to contribute to public-interest or advocacy work.
