Students should have a good understanding (advanced level) of the following topics: Observational versus experimental studies, (quasi-)experimental designs, randomization, sampling, confounding, bias, test construction, measurement error, test reliability, and test validity.

Student should be able to explain what type of conclusions can be drawn from different types of study designs (and what not), and should be able to analyse the quality (i.e., reliability and validity) of a psychological measurement instrument.

All skills and knowledge mentioned above should be at level 3: comparable to UvA Bachelor year 3, advanced, more specialised courses. Also, the courses used to fulfill the basic requirements for Methods and Statistics cannot be used for this track-specific requirement again. In sum: You should have obtained at least 24 EC to fulfill the basic requirements, and above that you must have obtained at least 6 EC to fulfill this track-specific requirement.

Students should have a basic understanding of some multivariate statistical models and latent variable models.

Students should be able to run and interpret the outcomes of a multivariate analysis (e.g., repeated measures analyses, MANOVA, principal component analysis) and a latent variable model (e.g., factor analysis, item response theory, structural equation modelling).

Students should have a good understanding (approximately one year of usage) of the basics of programming in a high level language (R, Python, Matlab, Visual Basic, Javascript, C, etc.); preferably R, including looping, branching, reading from and writing to files, and defining functions. R is the language mainly used in this Master's track. Students should be able to read data from file, and analyse data, both numerically (generalized linear models, hypothesis tests) and graphically (histograms, scatter plots, line charts, bar charts, etc.).

If you did acquire programming skills at the level mentioned above, but not in R, we offer a self-study module to prepare your R skill to be completed before the start of the programme.

If you have not acquired enough programming skills in your previous education, you can take the following course at the UvA:

In addition to the academic requirements, the selection committee assesses the relevance and quality of your motivation statement. Applications may get rejected if the motivation does not sufficiently match the content of the programme. The motivation statement consists of answers to specific questions regarding the programme.
