Why did you choose this programme?

“I was looking for a programme with a practical approach, in which I would directly develop skills linked to the working field.”

Why did you choose the University of Amsterdam?

“Besides the fact that Amsterdam is a beautiful city, I was already happy with the UvA during my bachelor. Moreover, the Master's in Software Engineering offers courses that exactly matched the knowledge I wanted to gain.”

How much freedom did you have when selecting courses or projects?

“In the programme, there was not much room in the subject choice. However, there was the opportunity to search for a thesis topic yourself.”

How practical or theoretical is the programme?

“While working as a scientific programmer, I feel that I apply the knowledge I learnt during the programme on a daily basis.”

How would you describe the atmosphere within the programme?

“Apart from being educational, it was also fun. There are many opportunities offered to students to get together and enjoy student life. During the courses, you are given enough moments to address the lecturers directly. There is also a good balance between group and individual work. Friends I gained during the programme, I still speak to weekly.”

What kind of thesis or graduation projects are possible?

“My thesis explored how to digitise sign language with an advanced motion-capture system. I recorded deaf people, translated their gestures into avatars and developed a prototype for train announcements in sign language.”

Was it easy for you to find a job after your master's? How did you end up at your job?

“After my thesis, the SignLab first asked me to help transfer the motion-capture system for six months. Soon the field of animation offered more challenge, so my contract was extended for three years.”

What advice would you give to someone considering this Master’s programme?

“Be prepared for an intensive programme, but know that it is worth it if you want to broaden your software knowledge. You will not only develop technical skills, but also social and user-centric insights.”
