The UvA promotes leadership that sets direction while giving people room to act. Leaders create a safe, professional environment in which people can develop, collaborate and take responsibility. In a changing world, this calls for leaders who bring people together, make choices and, together with their teams, build the university’s future. That is why the UvA wants to foster strong and adaptive leadership.

The objective of the leadership philosophy is to give direction and guidance to all leaders. It shows what we expect from our leaders, thereby contributing to shaping the culture and working environment that suits the UvA best.

Adaptive leadership

We believe in leadership that connects people, gives them space and encourages them to take professional and moral responsibility. We expect our leaders to set the course, recognise the diversity, knowledge, expertise and talents within their team, encourage employee growth, have the courage to challenge where necessary, and take responsibility for a socially safe working environment for all.

Completing these diverse tasks within a challenging context entails areas of tension. Resolving these areas of tension calls for adaptive leadership: the ability to embrace the complexity of areas of tension and consciously seeking the right balance within them.

Fostering leadership at the UvA

The UvA wants to foster and make room for the leadership of today and tomorrow. Whether they have years of experience, are still finding their niche within a leadership role, or are looking ahead to a leadership position.

UvA staff can find more about our leadership philosophy, practical tools and development opportunities on the staff portal.
