Overview of partnerships

  • Co van Ledden Hulsebosch Center

Partners: UvA (lead), AMC-UvA, NFI. TU Delft

The Co van Ledden Hulsebosch Center (CLHC) is the interdisciplinary center of expertise for forensic scientific and medical research in Amsterdam. The CLHC serves to bundle the expertise of the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Science, the Academic Medical Center (AMC-UvA), the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) and the department of Biomechanical Engineering at TU Delft.

  • Delta Institute for Theoretical Physics

    Partners: UvA (lead), UL, UU

The Delta Institute for Theoretical Physics unites the existing institutes for theoretical physics of the University of Amsterdam, Leiden University, and Utrecht University. The consortium obtained an enormous boost in 2013 with the award of a new grant worth 18.3 million euros from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) as part of its 'Gravitation Program’. The associated scientists are determined to continue their tradition of scientific excellence by attacking the grand challenges of modern physics and by attracting a new generation of top talent.

  • PAinT - Paint Alterations in Time

Partners: UvA (lead), Mauritshuis, Museum Boymans van Beuningen, Van Gogh Museum, Frans Hals Museum, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Gemeentemuseum Den Haag

The PAinT project aims to provide an improved scientific basis to guide future conservation strategies. A better understanding of the underlying mechanism and what they are influenced by is crucial for the evaluation of past and present approaches to the conservation of oil paintings. The PAinT team will investigate ageing, deterioration and migration processes in oil paints related to pigment-binding medium interactions.

  • QUVA-lab

    Partners: UvA en Qualcomm

QUVA-lab is a joint research lab by UvA and Qualcomm, the world-leading provider of processer and radio technology for mobile devices and especially smartphones. Its mission is to perform world-class research on deep vision. Such vision strives to automatically interpret with the aid of deep learning what happens where, when and why in images and videos. Research projects in the lab focus on learning to recognize objects in images from a single example, personalized event detection and summarization in video, and privacy preserving deep learning.

The establishment of the QUVA-lab was motivated by Qualcomm's acquisition of UvA spin-off Euvision Technologies during the summer of 2014. The research lab's management team is comprised of Max Welling, professor of Machine Learning at the UvA, Arnold Smeulders, professor of Computer Vision at the UvA, and Cees Snoek, principal engineer at Qualcomm and associate professor at the UvA.

  • Solardam

Partners: UvA (lead), VU, AMOLF, ECN

Solardam is an Amsterdam-based multidisciplinary consortium focused on cutting edge, innovative solar energy research. The Solardam consortium has received initial funding from the Amsterdam Academic Alliance (AAA). With this funding for Solardam, VU and UvA have the unique opportunity to establish a coherent solar energy research programme based on the concentrated expertise in the Amsterdam area. The consortium encompasses many of the disciplines within the science faculties in Amsterdam and makes optimal use of the proximity of AMOLF and the Energy research Center of the Netherlands (ECN).
