Oral History is an important research method for conservation and restoration, curatorial studies and art history to deepen insight about our cultural heritage and to inform the preservation, conservation and presentation of cultural heritage collections. To disseminate this unique source material, the transcribed recordings are collected as Interviews in Conservation Research at DANS, where they are systematically archived using rich and standardised metadata. This is an ongoing initiative and additions on Dutch cultural heritage are welcome to build a rich collection that provides unique views behind the scenes of artwork lie stories in the Netherlands.

Interviews in Conservation Research

The interviews with artists, their assistants, conservators, curators, collectors, designers, fabricators and material specialists can be found as part of the Interviews in Conservation Research collection. These spoken narratives focus on the art-making processes in relation to underlying ideas and the socio-cultural context of works of art and cultural heritage, in addition to cultures of conservation. They are accessible upon request after registration with DANS.

FAIC Oral History Project

The interviews with conservators and material specialists are additionally listed as part of the FAIC Oral History Project, supported by the Foundation for Advancement in Conservation of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC).
