Linguists with diverse theoretical orientations collaborate with one another at the UvA in research and teaching. This collaboration is based on the belief that a fundamental insight into linguistic phenomena can only be realised when these are approached from various angles such as language acquisition, language variation, language modeling and language typology, all of which are applied to regular spoken languages, Creole languages and sign languages. Linguistics is thus researched and explored in the broadest possible sense. Linguistics is ranked 25th in the QS World University Rankings by Subject, which makes it the highest ranked in continental Europe.
