Mass spectrometric research to study dynamic and system-wide changes in biomedicine.

Mass spectrometry is central to most of the work we do because it enables the precise identity and quantity of proteins. MS instruments and have three distinct sections where technology development occurs: (i) sample preparation, including high resolution molecular separation and molecular ionisation, (ii) mass analysis in the mass spectrometer and finally (iii) data analysis, that deals with massive amounts of molecular information.

There is a wide-scope of research activity we work on, from health and disease to forensics and biotechnology. Essentially any field if science that deals with molecular biosystems. Recently we have started new focus area with other groups at HIMS that deals with conservation science in the ' Science for Art' project.

The work in our group focuses on the development of a variety of technologies embedded or allied to mass spectrometers, and the application of MS technology to a range of biomedical applications.

Our research focuses on four key areas:

    • Mass spectrometric tools and allied technologies aimed at sensitive and quantitative analysis of proteins and their PTMs
    • Separation sciences that can efficiently resolve complex molecular mixtures so their analysis is within the capacity of our analytical technology
    • Appication of new chemistries in biomedical applications to reveal molecular functional information of protein networks and protein complexes
    • Computational and statistical methods to assist in the efficient validation and understanding of proteome-scale analysis of biomolecular systems.
