Meet our students

Lauren Fergus, Master’s student ECLR

'I chose the Master’s in European Competition Law and Regulation because of its unique focus and depth. It’s one of the few programmes in Europe that allows you to truly specialise in this field, combining rigorous legal analysis with an understanding of how markets operate. This specificity not only gives you a strong academic foundation, but also helps you stand out in the competitive job market.

In addition, the University of Amsterdam appealed to me for its global reputation and the high quality of its teaching staff. Many of the professors are actively involved in research and policy discussions, which brings real-world relevance into the classroom. Moreover, the campus itself is set in the heart of the vibrant, international city of Amsterdam, which is the perfect place for young professionals, offering both inspiration and opportunity.

The programme is also flexible and intellectually stimulating. I particularly enjoyed the chance to explore courses outside the core track, such as Consumer Law in the Digital Single Market, which provided valuable insights into the intersection of private law and EU regulation. The opportunity to make your programme your own has been incredibly enriching, both academically and personally.

Overall, this Master’s has equipped me with the tools, confidence, and network to pursue a career in European law. It’s a challenging and rewarding journey that I would recommend to anyone passionate about the future of law in Europe.'

Livia Labelle (France, Brazil), Master’s student ECLR

'One of the key strengths of the European Competition Law and Regulation track is its strong emphasis on practical learning. Through courses that are part of the ‘Amsterdam Law Practice’, students are encouraged to apply legal knowledge in real-life contexts, mirroring the work of legal professionals. As part of this practical component, I had the opportunity to participate in the European Law Moot Court and do an internship at a Dutch competition litigation law firm, 2 experiences that made me grow so much as a law student and as an individual.

The programme also benefits from an active student association, EU-reka, which brings students together and offers a rich calendar of academic, social, and career-focused events in the field of European law.'

Eva Leeuwenburgh, Master’s student ECLR

Studying in the European Competition Law and Regulation (ECLR) track at UvA was a perfect fit for my interests in law, politics, and economics. The programme offers a solid foundation in EU competition law while also encouraging students to think about the bigger picture – how law and regulation connect to economic, social, and political issues. Through its wide range of possible electives, you are able to tailor the programme to your own interests and ambitions.

I particularly enjoyed the mandatory 14-week course European Competition Law, which covers the substantive and procedural rules of EU competition law as well as the economic rationale behind it. Another favorite was the elective Climate Litigation and Investment Protection in Europe, which connected directly to issues I care about and highlighted the law’s real world impact. A major highlight was participating in the European Law Moot Court through the ELCR programme, which allowed me to apply my knowledge in a practical, international setting and to connect with students across Europe.

Overall, participating in the ECLR track gave me a strong legal foundation, practical experience, and a broader perspective on law’s role in shaping the world. I highly recommend this programme for anyone interested in competition law and regulation.
