There are quite a few sections and departments at Economics and Business. While we usually know what our direct colleagues do, what kind of work are the other teams doing? This week we asked Sanne Landhuis, Carl de Brouwer and Anne van der Luit of the internal communications team.

A coordinating role in our internal communications

Depending on their position in the organisation, everyone has their own specific and active role in our internal communications. We contribute, advise and provide support in this area. We’re involved in a lot of different projects, both within our own faculty and between different UvA faculties. Our contacts with so many different department gives us a broad perscpective that helps us to connect and combine different work processes. We prepare large and small communication plans that serve as a guide for what, how and when we communicate.

Providing clear and transparent information

An important task is to look at communication from the point of view of the target group, and making sure your information is clear and understandable. We get our information from the target groups themselves and then help them write or rewrite their web text or newsletters. We then optimise the information for the EB staff and student websites. We also coordinate the production of short videos, the design of infographics and other types of communication and we make sure communications are in line with our corporate identity.

We have 3 people on our team within the Marketing and Communication department:

Right now we’re busy with the following projects:

Online education during COVID-19

We've been closely involved in the process of transferring almost all of our education to an online environment. We provide input, advce and support in communications and information provided to lecturers and students by the ESC. We make sure the information is consistent and in the right sequence for Economics and Business, and this is an ongoing and challenging process. We monitor press conferences and maintain contact with the UvA Executive Board and its decisions to communicate information to employees and students, in coordination with the deans.

The road to Microsoft 365

The communication regarding the transition to Microsoft 365, with MS Teams and OneDrive, is a major UvA project. We provide advice and support to Harry Raam and work together with other faculties in this project.

Optimising teaching resources for lecturers

We’re also working with out Education Service Centre (ESC) colleagues to optimise the Reference Guide for Lecturers on the staff website, the information portal for all Economics and Business employees. One aspect of this is simplifying the ESC contact page. The next phase involves getting feedback from lecturers and putting the Reference Guide for Lecturers centre stage as the main starting point for information about teaching and education.

Enhancing Study Abroad information on the web

Some of the information for a number of themes on the Economics and Business student websites also has to be developed further and enhanced. Together with Evalien Rauws of the ESC Exchange team, we’re looking at how we can make information about EB Study Abroad more accessible on the website and how we can highlight the great options available in this student experience. We want to create more awareness about this in communications as soon as it’s possible for students to resume going abroad on an exchange.

OER knowledge clips

Important information for students related to the Teaching and Examination Regulations (OER) is being made more accessible through knowledge clips. These are short videos covering important aspects of the OER, made with input from the Faculty Student Council and in collaboration with ESC colleagues and the Examination Board.
