Roel Beetsma (MN Professor of Pension Economics, ASE) recently co-authored a paper published by the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). The paper is based on a survey exploring whether there is popular support for an EU financial aid package to help deal with the COVID-19 crisis.
In the paper, What kind of EU fiscal capacity? Evidence from a randomized survey experiment in five European countries in times of corona, researchers looked at the degree of support among EU citizens rather than support from the political establishment. Some of the key findings were that ‘Suitably designed, there is quite substantial support for such an EU instrument generally and across the sample countries’, and ‘...there is broad acceptance of long-run redistribution towards poorer countries.’
In general, the survey revealed that citizens support an EU aid package, provided it is properly designed and spent in specific policy areas. The full paper can be read online or downloaded at the link below.
