26 August 2019
Since 2010 the UvA has been sending a team of students to participate in the International Mathematics Competition (IMC) in Blagoevgrad. This year the UvA team came in 19th place and was just like last year, the highest ranked Dutch University team. Also this was the first time the UvA team obtained three gold medals, and both Wouter Rienks (60 points) and Mike Daas (57 points) have broken the old points record of a UvA participant (56 points). Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that Sam van den Brink, PhD candidate at the Korteweg-de Vries Institute, obtained the 9th place as the most efficient team leader.
We are very proud of the achievements of the UvA team and congratulate the students Mike Daas, Ivo Kroon and Wouter Rienks (gold medals), Lies Beers and Mick Gielen (silver medals), Floris Cnossen, Constantijn Dekker, Reinier Sorgdrager, Siebe Verheijen and Jim Wittebol (bronze medals) and Bart Zondervan (honorable mention).
The International Mathematics Competition for University Students 2019, was organised by University College London and hosted by the American University in Bulgaria in Blagoevgrad from the 28July until the 3August 2019. Participants were first-year to fourth-year Mathematics students from around the world and in total 360 students and 77 teams participated.
The students from the UvA team were trained for this competition during the honours course 'Training IMC 2019'. The best candidates in the course were selected to take part in the competition in Blagoevgrad. The UvA team was sponsored by the Faculty of Science and the Korteweg-de Vries Institute.
