There is an emerging network of scientists within the Faculty of Science and beyond dedicated to enhance partnerships with academic institutions in the Global South, with a special focus on Africa and Suriname. We aim to create an active network to improve visibility for the many individual projects and create new synergies that will ultimately lead to more research collaborations, sustainable academic partnerships and an increase in students and staff exchanges.

Our main objectives are:

  • Create visibility for research collaborations and educational projects in the Global South in our institution.
  • Discuss opportunities and challenges in collaborations with partners in the Global South, reflecting on the experiences of scientists coming from different fields. What do we need in order to establish stronger partnerships with a long-lasting impact?
  • Plant a seed for an active interdisciplinary network of people across different faculties and institutes. We would like to move from scattered individual initiatives to a more coordinated and structural framework leading to long-lasting research collaborations.
  • Institutional partnerships and more student mobility.
  • Reflect on best practises and challenges, including ethical aspects of reciprocity and power dynamics.
