Faculty of Science

Researchers and students at the Faculty of Science are fascinated by every aspect of how the world works, be it elementary particles, the birth of the universe or the functioning of the brain. With education and research in mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology, logic and computer science, we are fully immersed in the entire spectrum of the sciences.

Working at the Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science has over 1,200 staff members employed in teaching, research and support roles. There is a positive working environment and staff experience a high degree of independence.
Contact and location
Amsterdam Science Park Campus
The Faculty of Science is located at Amsterdam Science Park, one of the largest research hubs in Europe. Here, our researchers collaborate with colleagues from – among others – Nikhef, Amolf and CWI.

Teaching

Students at our faculty learn first-hand about the most recent research developments. They experience the expertise, enthusiasm and passion with which lecturers practise their discipline. Challenged to explore major scientific issues, they encourage lecturers to continually improve their teaching.

Research

Research at the Faculty of Science focuses on the major scientific challenges in modern society. Research institutes work together on leading multidisciplinary research themes. They forge connections with partners in society and industry.

Valorisation

The value of our research is boosted by collaboration with application-oriented partners. The Faculty of Science is positioned at the beginning of the knowledge value chain. Through further development in society or industry our research has the potential to lead to innovation and new products.

Research facilities

Technology Centre
Our very own Technology Centre supports research groups at the Faculty of Science in developing bespoke mechanical constructions, electronics, software and glass work for experimental set-ups.
