    Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh is Universitair Hoofddocent Duurzaamheidsrecht aan de Faculteit der Rechtsgeleerdheid van de Universiteit van Amsterdam.

    Margaretha richt zich in haar onderzoek, supervisie en onderwijs op de aanpak van duurzaamheidsvraagstukken in de gelaagde rechtsorde, met een speciale focus op fundamentele rechten en sociale rechtvaardigheid. Voordat zij aan haar huidige baan aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam begon, werkte zij als universitair docent internationaal publiekrecht aan de Universiteit Leiden (2018-2022). Daarvóór was zij als universitair docent milieurecht werkzaam aan de Rechtenfaculteit van de Universiteit van de Zuidelijke Grote Oceaan (University of the South Pacific, USP) in Port Vila, Vanuatu (2015-2018). Zij blijft verbonden aan USP als adjunct universitair docent milieurecht.

    Margaretha heeft veelvuldig gepubliceerd op het gebied van duurzaamheid en recht. Zij is redacteur van Environmental Law and Governance in the Pacific: Climate Change, Biodiversity and Communities (met Evan Hamman, Routledge 2020), dat de voornaamste huidige en toekomstige milieurechtelijke vraagstukken in het Stille Oceaangebied bespreekt. Haar andere boek, State Responsibility, Climate Change and Human Rights under International Law (Hart Publishing, 2019) zet uiteen hoe en wanneer staten aansprakelijk kunnen worden gehouden voor de gevolgen van klimaatverandering voor de bescherming van mensenrechten. Ze is ook de auteur van verscheidene boekhoofdstukken en artikelen in internationale tijdschriften. In 2018 verwierf zij een NWO Veni-subsidie voor haar onderzoeksproject Climate Justice through the Courts (2019-2023). Dit project onderzoekt de effectiviteit en mogelijke keerzijden van zgn. ‘klimaatzaken', met een focus op de rol van mensenrechten. Verder leidt ze het IUCN Climate Change Specialist Group project Cambridge Handbook on Climate Change Litigation (met Sarah Mead), dat opkomende best practices in de berechting van klimaatverandering identificeert.

    Margaretha’s onderzoek bouwt voort op meer dan vijftien jaar betrokkenheid bij multilaterale processen gerelateerd aan mensenrechten en klimaatveranderingen. Ze adviseerde overheden uit Afrika en het Grote Oceaangebied in de internationale klimaatonderhandelingen, vertegenwoordigde non-gouvernementele organisaties bij de VN Mensenrechtenraad en adviseerde het Bureau van de Verenigde Naties Hoge Commissaris voor de Rechten van de Mens en de Afrikaanse Commissie voor de Rechten van de Mens en de Volkeren over de gevolgen van klimaatverandering voor de bescherming van mensenrechten. Ze is of counsel bij Blue Ocean Law, een nichekantoor gespecialiseerd in milieurecht en mensenrechten, en lid van het Comité van Juridische Experts voor de Commissie van Kleine Eilandstaten over Klimaatverandering en Internationaal Recht, dat in het leven is geroepen om bij te dragen aan de bepaling, implementatie en geleidelijke ontwikkeling van het internationaal recht op het gebied van klimaatverandering. Daarnaast  fungeert ze als plaatsvervangend directeur voor Europa van het Global Network on Human Rights and the Environment en is ze lid van de Commissie Mensenrechten van de Adviesraad Internationale Vraagstukken. Ook is ze lid van het NWO-domeinbestuur Sociale en Geesteswetenschappen, de wetenschappelijke adviesraden van het European Journal of International Law en het Max Planck Yearbook of United Nations Law en van het redactiecomité van de Asia Pacific Journal on Environmental Law.

    Margaretha promoveerde aan het Europees Universitair Instituut in Florence op een proefschrift getiteld ‘State Responsibility, Climate Change and Human Rights under International Law’. Zij heeft diploma’s in Culturele Antropologie en Ontwikkelingsstudies (BSc) en Filosofie (BA) van de Radboud Universiteit; een Europese Master Mensenrechten en Democratisering (E.MA) van het Europees Inter-Universitair Centrum voor Mensenrechten en Democratisering in Venetië en een Graduate LLB van Nottingham Law School. Zij ontving de Lord Justice Holker beurs van de Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn (Londen) en is toegelaten tot de Bar van Engeland en Wales in 2014.
